The launch of the Business Pages Business Chamber (BPBC) has been a great success. Over 50 businesses were represented by 83 attendees. All of which were overwhelmed with the approach to networking, and what it can offer business owners in Tenerife.
The
directory continues to grow, with more and more new businesses becoming members. The benefits of marketing with us now are better than ever before. The online directory is now receiving over 250'000 visits per month, with an average of 500 new users monthly. The paper directory has been distributed with 25'000 copies in circulation, and the 9 - 5 call centre is expanding steadily, helping consumers find your numbers when they need them. BPBC Network Meeting - 10th July 2008
The second BPBC Network meeting will take place on the 10th of July. The event is to be held at the same location, which is now the resident venue for the Chamber Meetings. We will start the event at 2pm and work through until 4pm. This meeting will also see the appointment of three new Chamber representatives, as we begin to build the committee. Having more individuals involved with the growth of the Business Chamber will allow it to flourish. New ideas and directions will embrace all and widen the route we take as business owners in Tenerife.

opportunities is what we all need, and with the continued support from everyone, the business chamber will create them.
The Networking Approach
There is only one letter different between Net-working and Not-working, that's the letter "E". We believe this letter stands for enthusiasm, which is what you need to bring with you when you attend these meetings. The last four letters in enthusiasm stand for "I am selling myself". This is exactly what you need to do at these events. It's not a place to bring order forms, and credit card machines, but it is a place to bring yourself, and a great personality. People buy off people they like, and if they don't purchase directly, they will definitely recommend you to their friends. This is what building a business network is all about, sell yourself first, equals sell your products and services.

Q. Name and business enterprise.
A. Fernando, my company is Ferae Consulting
Q. How long have you been operating in
Tenerife?
A. I have been in business for just over 6 years.
Offer our fellow Premium Members a little background into your business.
My company deals with all types of business, mainly Taxes and Accounting. I personally hold BAIBA with honours, after spending most of my life studying, with my final courses finishing at Manchester University. This explains why my English is fluent. I presently deal with many English companies, and individuals, and help them with all of the Spanish Fiscal system..
Q. How do you view your business market at present?
A. At present in Tenerife the economy is very hard, with no future solutions. Many people in business fear the future and what it holds. property prices are falling, currency is high and interest rates are on the up.
This is bad for our economy, as we rely on these sectors so much. if visitors stop coming, then we will suffer like dominoes.
The people visiting the Island now come with small budgets, and stay in the resorts. This is effecting the local businesses, as people are just not spending on the high street. Its time for us all to brace for the next few years.
Q. How do you see the future, what advice can you offer fellow business members?
A. Studies show us that this period will remain for a minimum of three years. What you are doing with the BPBC is a great prospect, creating new opportunities for people in business. We must convince people it is OK to spend, and not let the media scare monger us into a bad economy. The comforting thought is that it is not just Spain, but the whole western world is under crisis. If we concentrate our markets within the islands economy, we will continue to develop and grow.
Q. What are your views on Business Pages Tenerife, and bptenerife.com?
A.I am pleased to be the first Spanish person to comment on your company. It is seen by us as a great bridge to the English market. For example, my main target is English people in business, this directory helps me to find them all. I help many people save money, so they should be glad of your product. It is opening the doors to many peoples products in the south.
Q. How do you see Tenerife's future as a whole?
A.I love Tenerife, I love everything about the island. It can offer so much to so many different types of people. And the Canarian people love the English and what they bring with them. We see the south of the island, as the real heart to our developing country. New T.V. Show for Tenerife, staring the new M.D.
The new M.D. of Business Pages Tenerife is Hector Gonzolaz, he launches his new career with a brand new TV show.
Hector joined the company in May, and is taking the business in a new media direction.
The new TV show will star the M.D. talking business with local entrepreneurs in Tenerife. Hector, already a well respected business man in Tenerife, will visit and interview local business owners collecting their thoughts on the economy today. He will be advising businesses on how to push and market their companies in a modern world.

Q.What are the top tips to help me make the most of networking? How can I improve my networking skills?A.
Planning...
* Choose carefully the events you go to.
If possible obtain a guest list in advance.
* Firstly determine why you are attending the event for information purposes and networking or specifically networking.
* Prepare a 'what do you do' answer
that's short, snappy and memorable.
Arriving...
* Arrive on time for the event - it
always seems a lot easier to introduce
yourself to someone when you are one of the first arrivals.
* Wear your name badge on the right.
It's where your eye goes to when you shake hands.
* Use 'hosts' & organisers to introduce you to people, they are generally well connected and secondly it's in their interest to do so.
Connecting/respecting...
* Treat everyone the same and never make assumptions about the people you meet.
Mix not Magnet!
* If you are not very confident try not to attach yourself (like glue) to the first person you get speaking to. Remember the person you are talking to, whilst they might be enjoying your company, probably wants to be able to chat to one or two other people as well.
Listen up...
* Listen to what other people do first and (everyone is interested if you're interested in them) and listen for link words that connect with who you are and what you do.
Talking...
* Keep conversation to neutral topics, avoid monopolising the conversation. Ask questions that require more than yes/no answers.
* You will create a better first
impression if you deliberately copy the pace and volume of the person you are speaking to.
Abundance - don't ask, offer!
* Offer information and contacts to match the links. It provides a reason for follow-up and staying in contact.
To drink or not to drink?
* Generally you need a clear head so moderation is the key. Yes it can help confidence but can give others a negative impression.
Get out of your comfort zone..
* For every person you meet and every hour you spend with them, they will be an ambassador for you and make another 10 recommendations on your behalf
Often the crucial moment (the business
card)...
* If people are interested in what you do generally they will ask for a card - don't offer your card right at the outset.
Taking notes...
* As a memory aid it can often be useful to make notes about a person on the back of their business card.
Follow up...
* Try to follow up with people you have met (recap on your notes on business cards, add useful contacts to your database).
Finally...
* If you have tried all the tips and you still don't feel comfortable "try" again!
Practice makes perfect.
