According to the latest press release from the Spanish tourism organization Exceltur, the Canary Islands tourist figures are on the up. This is proven by the recently released statistics that point to steadily increasing rates of hotel occupancy.
Growing interest from the general public into hotel holidays is now a proven fact according to the Exceltur survey conducted by professionals among the sector.
It showed that just over 60% of hotels across the Canary Islands reported an increase in occupancy levels this year. This is defiantly good news for the Canary’s as figures from previous years had shown a small decline. It seems the hard work and effort ploughed into the new marketing direction has paid off and we could well see a huge increase over the winter period. But figures reported by the hotels did show profit margins were still down, maybe they should lower the prices of the restaurants and bars and encourage guests to spend more time in the hotel and not searching for better alternatives. Many times I have stayed in “Top Resorts” and found them to be so poorly managed and understaffed I have relentlessly gone in search of a decent meal with free entertainment. I often ask myself “do these people come from the same planet” as the Bobby Darcy impersonator sings his heart out to the pipe organ.
Only 19% of hotels surveyed that profits were up in the second quarter, maybe some of them have got it right after all. But as we will no doubt see, this will be blamed on price wars, labour costs and increasing over heads, the poor reasons we are always given for bad management
